Description:
A great looking, fine looking Plains . 45 cal, 33 3/4” heavy octagon barrel turned for starter (not present) with a bright very good plus bore showing some light oxidation in the grooves and strong rifling throughout. The heavy barrel diameter of this rifle measures 1 1/4” and the barrel shows remnants of an older reapplied blue-black finish toning to gray-brown with some scattered light dings and spots of oxidation staining. There is a small dovetailed filled in with silver near the breech and a small “4” stamped on the right flat and “081” on the left. The back action lockplate, patent breech and tang show what appears to be remnants of an old reapplied nickel finish with some scattered flaking and oxidation. The barrel shows two somewhat rudimentary brazed-on ramrod thimbles along with German silver hardware including a tailpipe, oval wedge escutcheons, triggerguard, buttplate with toeplate, pendulum patchbox and decorative lock screw escutcheon. The smooth walnut stock remains in good condition as lightly cleaned showing a few small cracks near the tip, scattered handling marks and a few small repairs above the lockplate and along the right side edge. There are two holes along the upper tang for mounting sights, the rear sight shows two widely spaced tall fork  posts,, and the front is a target globe with fine post. A brass-tipped wooden ramrod is present and the single acting lock with double set triggers seems to function normally.
