S&W Safety Hammerless Fifth Model 2" .38 - The New Departure Bicycle Gun "Lemon Squeezer"
This Top-break, S&W "Bicycle" is a scarce collectible, manufactured in 1940, which was the last year of New Departure production.
The New Departure Safety Hammerless model had gone through five iterations of changes and improvements, beginning with the First Model in 1887, culminating with the Fifth Model in 1940.
A total of 261,493 Safety Hammerless revolvers were produced, of those, just 41,500 were Fifth Models, and only a fraction of those were the "Bicycle" model, the only model ever offered in .38 S&W having a 2” barrel.
This piece retains ninety percent of the original factory nickel finish. Light patches of oxidation can be seen around the barrel, however the bore and cylinders have not been affected, nor have the internal parts.
The metal remains in excellent condition, with a single light mark beneath the muzzle, and a few nicks at the butt.
All the screw slots are fine, the nomenclature and S&W logo show strong and the numbers are all matching. The action times perfectly, the breaking-action is crisp with no play and ejection is smooth with a strong “snap” return.
It is very common to find the cylinder face and forcing cone of the barrel on Top-breaks corroded to black, and deeply pitted from the corrosive powders and primers of the time, this piece shows perfectly clean and bright factory nickel in those areas, a clean, bright bore with deep lands and grooves, as well as each cylinder chamber.
The pristine and unworn internal components are indicative of being fired very little, if at all.
This piece has been professionally preserved.
