Infamous Indian Wars Era carbine of the type used by then Lt. Colonel George Custer at the Little Bighorn Battle.
A tremendous development over percussion rifles, the Model 1873 was the Allin trapdoor design, and was named for it's hinged breechblock, which opened like a trapdoor, allowing cartrige loading. The cavalry carbine used a 22-inch (560 mm) barrel.The Springfield Trapdoor Cartridge Rifle and Carbine was produced for the military in 1873. It was a redesign of the Army’s Allin Trapdoor rifle. The Springfield Trapdoor held the new, more powerful .45-70 military cartridge. Full-stocked, 32 inch barreled rifles, as well as half-stocked, short-barreled carbines, were produced.
With their new 1873 Trapdoor Carbines, Custer and the 7th Cavalry rode off to the Battle of the Little Big Horn and into the pages of history. The armament of Custer’s regiment is fairly uniform, the enlisted men being armed largely with the single shot Model 1873 Springfield Carbine, an accurate long range arm intended to keep an enemy at a distance.
The Springfield Model 1873 was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle and carbine adopted by the United States Army. The gun, in both full-length and carbine versions, was widely used in battles. Many were captured by native americans and used.
This particular carbine was made in 1889 according to Springfield records. Bore is shiny through out with good riflings. Stock is good and refinished with some scratches and a few dings and has a non structura crack behind the tang however. A few freckles on the barrel exterior.
