An extraordinary rifle from the remarkable and legendary stockmaker & gunmaker Jerry Fisher, metalsmith & gunmaker Steve Heilmann and master firearms and knife engraver Barry Lee Hands. The caliber is 416 Rigby. The case covered in elephant hide. This rifle will never be repeated.
In the process of building this rifle hundreds of progress photos were taken over a 5 year time period. The purpose of this photo documentation is to demonstrate, not how to build a custom rifle, but how much planning, work and artistic talent goes into such a rifle.
Who better than Jerry Fisher to orchestrate the building of this or any finest quality rifle. Jerry's name opens many doors in the world of custom gunmaking. When told of this project suppliers of barrels, actions, stock blanks and custom gun cases wanted in. Let me thank the following folks right up front for their parcipitation. John Krieger of Krieger Barrels, Mike and John Roden of Granite Mountain Arms, Jim Hafferty of Burls and More ( stockblanks) and Marvin Huey of Huey Gun Cases. Jerry's great friend, the late Jim Carkhuff, dispatched the buffalo with a rifle Jerry had built for him and donated the hide for the case.
Since the metal work is always the start of any custom rifle project I had the pleasure to begin this rifle. I almost always begin a project with completing all metalwork on the action first. But on this rifle I started the barrel first as the barrel is where 70% of my the hours were spent. The Granite mountain Arms action is a great action Their large magnum action with it's .750 diameter bolt is perfect for the robust 416 Rigby cartridge. This is a big action. These actions are a great value and while very well machined, require further refining for each specific large cartridge. Machining for scope rings, detail work and the extended tangs, (as they are deadly weapons) were the last metalwork performed.
