Description:
.50 RF. 20" round barrel with single spring retained barrel band. SN: 36895. Blued and color casehardened finish smooth walnut stock and forend. Standard Spencer markings on top of receiver, no visible cartouche. One of the more than 11,000 Model 1860 Spencer Carbines that were updated by Springfield Arsenal in the post-Civil War period. The carbine features the added Stabler magazine cut-off and has a 3-groove Springfield liner in the barrel, reducing the bore to .50 caliber. Rear sight is of the Model 1865 pattern, as is the magazine follower tube, which has a grooved base. Retains sling bar and ring at reverse wrist and sling swivel in toe. Front sight blade is an old replacement. An attractive Indian War period modified and used Spencer carbine from the Civil War. While this carbine does not appear in the Springfield Research Service serial number lists, Spencer #36897 is listed as being in the possession of Troop I of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry in June of 1865. Exceptional condition.
