HARPERS FERRY MODEL 1841 (CSA) REBEL SHORTENED RIFLE W / GETTYSBURG HISTORY
58 caliber, 27.75" barrel secured by two flat brass spring retained bands, no S/N. Brown finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked with the {American eagle} / US forward of the hammer and in three vertical lines at the tail: HARPERS / FERRY / 1851. Tang date appears to read 1853 and the correct Harpers Ferry small V / P / {eagle head} proof marks are present at the breech along with the remnants of the Harpers Ferry barrel inspection that was probably WW / P. Stock with the three appropriate router holes for Harpers Ferry production. Rifle appears to have been shortened during the period of use, with the barrel cut down from 33" to just under 28", the stock cut back further, and with the front band and band spring relocated to a new position 17" from the breech. A new front sight was dovetailed into the barrel and "sighting notches" were cut into the tops of both barrel bands. The original rear sight is in place. The initials TC and TCP appear in several places on the gun and the initials JH are carved into the patchbox recess. Both sling swivels are missing, with the swivel mounting stud intentionally removed from the bottom of the upper band. An old trumpet head ramrod accompanies the gun, that appears to be from a French or Belgian musket, with a cupped head for elongated ball ammunition. The rod has been shortened to 27.5" and re-threaded at the end for implements. Although the bore is smooth, the .58 caliber, relocated upper band and spring, added front sight and appropriately modified ramrod. OBVIOUS southern arsenal work to put an otherwise damaged rifle back into the field as a serviceable carbine or musketoon.
Condition:

Very Good. Well worn showing the wear expected of a Civil War period gun that saw significant Action. Metal oxidized with a Very attractive brown patina, has some expected scattered pitting.  Mechanically functional, most marks partially legible. Stock with as expected Battlefield scattered dings and marks. There is also some slight minor chipping, loss and cracking around the lock mortise.

WITH ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE HISTORY: This rifle was owned by Twice wounded* PVT John Hackett of the GA 60th infantry. 1 day after entering the makeshift Hospitol Pvt Hackett met and befriended Pvt. Thomas C. Pressley who was also wounded and part of the same Regiment. They became Great friends. Unfortunately Pvt Hackett was KIA Shenandoah County, VA. This Rifle was than passed to his comrade and best friend TC Pressley. Sometime after the war Pvt Pressley sent the sum of $5 to his friends widow. PURCHASED 1989 FROM GREAT GRANDMOTHER OF PVT JOHN (JOHNNYCAKE) HACKETT.
