Description:
A fabulous original watercolor painting by Paul Adam Wehr (1914-1973)...artist and illustrator who painted covers for Sports Afield and many other publications in the 1940's and early 1950's. Wehr's commercial art clients included Braniff Airlines, Coca-Cola, Ford, International Harvester, Libby, Parker Pens, Standard Oil, Swift, the U.S. Air Force, Collier's, Coronet, Country Gentleman, Popular Mechanics, Redbook, Sports Afield, This Week and True. Also just about every beer company in the US. Wehr was also a noted WPA artist. He was especially known for his realist art and exceptional watercolors. His works were compared to Norman Rockwell and Stevan Dohanos. His career spanned over 40 years with numerous prizes and awards. This is a watercolor painting of him and his friend...fishing partner...Sports Afield editor Michael Hudoba...Paul is cooking and Michael is holding the fish. This fine watercolor came out of Michael Hudoba's estate. Mike was President of the National Press Club 1970 and was editor and a veteran columnist for Sports Afield for 25 years. Michael Hudoba and his wife Frances drowned in a boating accident in September of 1984. This painting was used as a cover for Sports Afield magazine in the late 40's or early 50's...still doing research on that for the exact month and year. The colors are vivid and super bright with great detail. You can almost hear that fire crackling and feel the warmth of it. The painting is framed in its original wormy chesnut oak frame. The painting remains in excellent condition, no repairs or issues of any kind. The actual painting measures 17 inches tall by 12 1/2 inches wide and is signed in the bottom left hand corner by "WEHR".  Provenance fully documented on this painting. A fabulous piece of sporting art by a well known artist/illustrator. USPS priority mail is 35.00 professionally packed and padded in a mirror box.
