Description: The M1941 Johnson Rifle is an American short-recoil operated semi-automatic rifle designed preparing for World War II. SN B 2182. One of only 20,000 produced!
The M1941 competed with the U.S. M1 Garand Rifle for becoming the main battle rifle for the US military. The 1941 Johnson was used by the Marines during WWII including Iwo Jima and the 1st Parachute Battalion during the Guadalanal campaign (Firearms News).
Condition: This rare and unaltered rifle is in good condition. Barrel is excellent with bore shiny throughout. Completely functional with cosmetic wear and a few handling dings. Stock left rear has been repaired. Right fore-stock is chipped. Buttplate is Pachmeyer. Comes with original Johnson butt plate that can be fitted onto the stock. Metal work is good and completely free of any rust or corrosion. Completely functional aand shootable.
The M1941 rifle uses the energy from recoil to cycle the rifle. As the bullet and propellant gases move down the barrel, they impart force on the bolt head which is locked to the barrel. The Johnson rifle utilizes a two-piece stock and a unique 10-round rotary magazine, designed to and does use the same 5-round stripper clips already in use by the M1903 and 1903A3 Rifle.
This system outclasses and has advantages in comparison to the M1 Garand rifle, such as a greater 10 round magazine capacity combined with the ability to recharge the magazine with ammunition (using 5-round magazines or individually) at any time, even with the bolt closed on a chambered round by removing the magazine and filling and reinserting it.
The Johnson rifle does not—unlike the M1 Rifle—eject an en bloc clip upon firing the last round in the magazine with its tell-tale ping. The lack of the ping was considered a sound advantage by some soldiers. Despite repeated requests by the Marine Corps to adopt the rifle, the Johnson rifle lacked the support of US Army Ordnance, which had already invested considerable sums in the development of the M1 Garand. The Garand study budget was over ran by over $1 million. The Garand study cost overage was buried in the costs of the full M1 production order.
