Description:
#17453, John Rigby & Co. 43 Sackville St. London. Late St. James St.: A Sidelock Ejector Rising Bite (Vertical Bolt) Double Rifle in 470 Nitro Express Made in 1908, 28" Ejector Chopper Lump Krupp Steel Barrels, Full length rib with 1 standing & 1 folding rear sights, London Nitro proved at 75 cordite with a 500 grain bullet, Bushed strikers, Double triggers, Spring actuated locking detent on the safety slide, A piece of wood that borders on being an exhibition piece, Horn grip cap, 15 5/16" LOP over a 1 1/4" wood extension plus a fresh 7/8" Silvers pad, If the wood spacer was removed and then a 1" pad added it would come out to 14 1/4", Great Big Bore weight of 11 lbs. 14 oz., 95% coverage of very well cut classic period Rigby scroll, This piece was restocked quite some time ago in a 100% professional manner and has all the trappings it was done in England as the internal inletting is done in 100% English cut inletting, The forend wood is original, This gun just returned from Rigby in London to be freshened up, The barrels have been reblacked and all the script remains as sharp as the day it was cut and now remain at 100%, No case colors remain but it has a nice patina that appears it was never brushed, The wood professionally re-oiled at Rigby and remains at 100%, The checkering remains at about 95%, The bores are excellent with square rifling the entire way, The left barrel looks like new but has some light pits 3" back of the muzzle that are not problematic in any way. The locks are by Chilton, and both remain in excellent condition and have not been worked on or screwed with since day one except for a recent strip & clean at Rigby in London. This very 470 is very accurate with modern Hornady ammo and will shoot into an 1" at 65 yards. The Rigby Rising Bite was and continues to be one of the most famous double rifles ever built and used by hunters worldwide. The first modern Rising Bite in 470 was finished in December of 2015. It is said, Rigby now makes more sporting rifles than any other London gunmaker.

The breech face marked with the R & B (John Rigby & Thomas Bissell) Patent #1141 which was patented March 21, 1879, the beginning of the Hammerless gun era, for the barrel locking method which we call the rising-bite. It is also marked #973 in this vignette which applies to this gun as being the nine hundred & seventy third gun built under the R & B patent. The action is #2812 and the barrel is #2906.

Rigby was at 72 St. James's St from 1866 to 1907 and then at 43 Sackville St. (the address of this gun) from 1908 to 1955 and then on to 32 King Street, St James's. In 1963 the shop moved to 28 Sackville Street and in 1969 to 13 Pall Mall. In 1984 J Roberts & Son (Gunmakers) Ltd bought the company and in 1985 moved it to their premises at 5 King Street, Covent Garden. In 1987 the factory and shop moved to 66-68 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark. In 1997 the goodwill and rights to the Rigby name were bought by Rogue River Rifle Works and a new company, John Rigby & Co Inc. was formed at 1317 Spring Street, Paso Robles, California. On about March 1, 2013, John Rigby & Co. was acquired by Blaser of Germany. All connections with the unbelievable and indescribable mess in California have been severed, and the Rigby Company was moved back to London and run by Marc Newton. The first modern Rising Bite in 470 was finished in December of 2015. I wish them continued success as Rigby in this 21st century has made its mark as one of the leading sporting gun makers ever to practice the art of gunmaking. Long live the King!
