Description:
This Stevens Model 250 2nd type 12 ga is completely original, mechanically sound, locks up tight, and has excellent bores, but shows considerable handling abuse. It is in good condition and has 30” mono-block fluid steel barrels with 2 ¾” chambers. It weighs in at 7 lbs 15oz with a LOP = 14”, DC = 1 ¾, & DH = 2 ¼”. I would call this “an old brown gun”. But it appears to have been shot very little because it functions perfectly and has very good bores. There is a small crack near the back of the left lock plate that I think would not limit serviceability.  The stock is all original with about 80% varnish, very good checkering, and the original butt plate is in good shape. I bought it because it was the best example of this model I came across in 50 years collecting American double barrel shotguns.

The Stevens Arms & Tool Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass. Model 250 2nd type is a sidelock hammer gun made in 12 & 16 ga weighing about 8 pounds. It had two unique features. Lockup was via double under lugs plus a 3rd fastener on the rib extension. This design closely resembles that found on all Remington hammer guns which were made on patents by Andrew Whitmore. Second was that barrels were mono-block being a solid breach-block with steel tubes inserted. This construction was patented and introduced by Pieper of Belgium. It has back-action sidelocks. Niles reports that 5000 units were made between 1904 & 1908 at a price of $20. Surviving examples are rare.
