Colt .38 Colt revolver:
Has 6 inch barrel with good bore. Double action, side swing, 6 shot US Navy revolver. Blade front and notch rear sight. Metal has its original blue finish with light wear. Checkered hard rubber colt grips. SN 1040, first year of production.
The Colt Model 1889 was the first double-action revolver with a swing-out cylinder, released by a sliding latch. Approximately 31,000 Colt Model 1889 revolvers were produced.
Please consider thei following comment that came in from an interested party.
"This may very well be an 1889. However if it is, it has had an arsonal up-grade to 1895 specs. When the arsonal up-graded the 1889 they would grind off the serial number on the butt. That is why you can not find the serial number. 1040 may very well be the serial number as sometimes colt put the serial number on cylinder release depending on the contract at the time. However, in truth of advertising, you need to advertise it as an 1889 up-graded to 1895 specks. After really studying this, I'm pretty sure that is what you have. The star "c" is the original sub-inspector's marking from the 1889 contract. The tridents on the cylinder are inspection marks from later conversion, read up-grade."
