Description:
#4969 Colt S/A, 7-1/2x45COLT, “U.S. Cavalry” model, 5XXX range (1874), O.W. Ainsworth (OWA) inspected throughout. This hard-used old veteran of the 1870-1890s Indian Wars in the American West has overall light to heavy pitting on about 70% of the surface metal mixing with a pin-prick pepper appearance in the background. It is well marked with the “A” inspector martial markings in all the correct places, and all numbers (except the grips) match. The grips do look to probably be original one-piece woods, but do not fit this revolver well enough (in my opinion) to be the originals to this old veteran. The ejector rod housing is the correct early 1st model captive style, but the rod, spring, and Bullseye rod head are are replacements as are several screws, the cylinder axle pin, maybe the cylinder, and (I think) the loading gate. It is also missing one backstrap screw due to the frame screwhole threads being stripped. The correct italic barrel address line is readable, long hammer knurling, etc. But suffice to say this …and this is a note to remember on virtually ALL S/As. Since many, if not most all used 1st Gen Colt Single Actions have probably been enhanced, restored, and/or juiced-up to at least SOME degree (…and especially these highly collectible militaries) by various owners, that an interested buyer should always take this possibility into consideration. Consequently, this gun has been valued with that possibility in mind. Okay, all that was the “bad stuff” …now here is the real bonus!! The best known serial range for the Colt S/As issued to Custers 7th Cavalry is 4500-6100 with some other small smatterings scattered outside this main block. So with some good research, this hard used Colt has a VERY strong possibility of being a battlefield pick-up from that famous Little Big Horn fight!!! This is a really, REALLY super rare opportunity to own a great piece of the Wild West frontier history as well as also possibly being a gun that participated in one of the most famous Indian fights as well!! It is getting very, VERY difficult to find any “Custer Range” military Colt S/A in any condition, and especially one priced anything under $50,000 or more. Just Google several of the Colts in this range that went to !! About Good/ Good+ as described. $31,650
