Description:
Up for sale today we have a very special and very rare collectible rifle! This is a beautiful original Springfield Officers Model 1873/1876 Trapdoor Type 2 rifle chambered in .45-70 Govt. Only 477 Officer's Model Trapdoor rifles were built and this example is one of only 252 Type 2 rifles that were built. These rifles were built to the highest craftsmanship standards for high ranking military officers. This particular model is highly documented by the foremost authority on these rifles, Dr. Caleb Vance Haynes of Arizona State University Department of Anthropology. Includes an entire folder with various letters, data sheets, and a chapter excerpt from Al Frasca's book. Also includes a list that names all 16 Officers whom purchased these rifles during the period when this particular rifle was built. This rifle is an antique and it is in excellent original condition for it's age. Has all of the correct markings. The top of the Trapdoor breech is marked "U.S. MODEL 1873". The left side of the barrel near the chamber is marked with the correct "V.P." The barrel band is marked "U" on the right side. The receiver has very finely done factory engraving and is marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" on the right side. The stock does have handling marks all over which is expected for a 140+ year old rifle. But overall the wood is in very good sound condition and retains all of it's original proof marks and beautiful checkering. The bottom of the stock has the correct "CIRCLED P" proof mark. The original lot number of "74" is stamped just behind the upper receiver tang; Dr. Vance goes on to explain the various markings and which 2 batches of rifles this could have came from. This particular rifle was built sometime between October 1878 and March 1879. Has the original wood half pistol grip that was introduced on the Type 2 model. The forend cap is pewter with factory engraving. The original metal butt plate is also engraved lightly on top and has the "U.S." markings. Retains the original cleaning rod made of hickory wood. The factory 26 inch barrel has an outstanding bore with crisp sharp rifling that still retains much shine to it. Has some very faint pitting near the muzzle of the bore but excellent nonetheless. The receiver on these rifles were originally case hardened and the remaining metal parts were blued. There is still some remnants of the case hardened finish visible on areas of the receiver. This rifle has mostly patinaed down to a nice grayish-brown color on the metal. There is some pitting on the outside of the barrel mainly near the muzzle but it has stabilized and is very sound overall. The action is in excellent condition and works very well. When the trapdoor is flipped up the chamber beneath is superb and the metal is in excellent condition, still retaining some of it's original case hardened finish. Still has all three of the original sights including the flip up front sight, the 1200 yard rear ladder sight which is marked "R" on the left side, and the adjustable rear tang sight mounted to the stock. The little circles that are visible on top of the wood just behind the tang are from the sight being folded down forward over many years. Overall this is just a very well preserved and excellent example of a very rare antique military rifle.
