Description:
Smith and Wesson DA Revolver in 32 Caliber with a scarce low serial number in the 5000 range.  It has the early style floral or "Turkey" grips which is usually found on early production.  This one has the standard 3" Barrel and it's so early that the patent dates only go up to 1877 without the 1880 patent. The barrel, cylinder, latch, and frame are all matching.  I can't find any numbers on the inside of the grips but they appear to be original to the gun and this style grip was only used for a short time in the early 1880's.  The main distinction of the 2nd Model is that it has an oval side plate which was deemed to be a structural improvement over the square sideplate found on the 1st Models...S&W only made 30 1st Models.  The other distinctive feature is the cute little half flutes on the cylinder to allow room for 2 sets of stop notches.  Production of the 2nd Model only lasted a short time from 1880 to 1882 with only 22,142 produced.  Condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good Condition with 90% original nickel on the frame with a rather heavy uncleaned patina in the bare spots.  The Barrel has 80% original nickel while the cylinder has turned mostly to a brown patina with minute traces of original nickel in the flutes and protected areas.  The blued trigger guard and barrel latch have aged to a dark patina.  Case colored hammer and trigger are almost all patina with maybe just a hint or two of silver where the colors faded out.  The turkey grips have all of their design intact but a little worn on the high spots...nice S&W monogram at the top of each panel and no cracks or repairs.  The action works correctly in both double and single action modes, seems to index correctly, and the barrel still latches to the frame tightly with no play.  The bore is Good overall with good lands and grooves but is a little frosty with a few minor pits.  For a black powder era gun...especially for an early double action cartridge revolver, it would have gotten A LOT of attention and use.  Most of them probably didn't survive because despite S&W's claim that they built 22,000 of these, they are not common at all and they rarely turn up at shows.  This one has survived in pretty good shape and has never been cleaned up or redone.  Antique, Pre-1898 Production.  Not a Modern Firearm under Federal Law.  State and Local Laws may vary.  No sales to NYC, Chicago, HI, or DC.  FFL required in NY and NJ. Buyer must be 21 years of age.  Sorry, we do not ship internationally but we will ship to a licensed exporter if you make the necessary arrangements.  $20.00 shipping.
