Smith and Wesson Model 1, 2nd Issue Revolver. Made from 1860 to 1868 from Serial Numbers 11,672 to 128,000. This one is in the 81,000 range. 22 Short, 3 3/16" ribbed octagon barrel. 7 Shot Cylinder and saw-handle shaped grips. Brass Frame is silver plated, blued barrel and cylinder, case colored hammer, and varnished Rosewood Grips. This is one of the few you'll find that still looks close to when it was new. It retains a remarkable amount of its original finish.
The 2nd Issue was an improvement upon the Model 1, First Issue made from 1857-60..the world's first successful cartridge gun. They fired an early version of what we know today as the .22 Short Cartridge but made with a copper case and loaded with black powder (they were not designed for smokeless ammunition which didn't exist at the time). Because the cartridges were waterproof, these S&W's were extremely popular with both Union and Confederate Soldiers during the Civil War as well as in the American West. Mark Twain even owned one and wrote jokingly about its ingenious design and yet how under-whelming the cartridge it held describing them as little "homeopathic pills that took all 7 shot to equal one dose".
Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Excellent. 2 Dimensional Photos and my poor photograph skills simply do not do this little gun justice. It is gorgeous! The metal surfaces of the barrel, cylinder and ejector rod retain Barrel and Cylinder retain 90% original bright blue flaking with light freckling, small dings and a small patch of scratches on the left side barrel. It is not common to find these with this much original cylinder blue which is the part of the gun that receives the most wear...it sticks out on the sides and it gets the most powder residue. That's why you rarely see them in this kind of condition. The cylinder on this revolver has strong consistent bright blue all the way around and shows minimal aging. Excellent Markings throughout and the Cylinder has its Patent Dates including the Famous 1855 Rollin White Patent Date which gave Smith and Wesson a nearly 15 year monopoly on the cartridge gun revolver market. I did my best to photograph them but the markings are smaller than a flea so they're a little blurry. In person, they are sharp! See Photos. The frame retains perhaps 95% original silver plate showing a few small areas thinning, moderate scratches, some dings on the forward edge of the frame, spots of staining on the left side and an overall pleasing tarnish. The hammer and trigger are mostly a mottled gray patina. The smooth rosewood grips remain in near excellent condition retaining nearly all of their original varnish showing a few small flakes, tiny dings and handling marks. The right panel is appropriately stamp-numbered to the gun and the barrel, frame, and cylinder are matching by assembly numbers. See Photos. Good bore showing a 3-4 small areas of pits and oxidation, otherwise the bore is bright with strong rifling throughout. Barrel-to-frame fit is very good and the mechanism functions well with solid timing and lockup. This is an exceptional chance to add a superb example of an early S&W to your collection. Compared to other antique weapons, these early S&W's are an absolute bargain and almost criminally under-appreciated given their historical and technological significance.
