Description:
#4886 Colt 1851 Navy, 71XXX range (1858) and being the scarce variation “Large guard iron-strapped New York” which were Model 1851s that were either still in the parts stages or partially completed guns that were returned from the London “Pall Mall” factory when Colt closed it in the mid-late 1850s. These were made with iron triggerguards and back staps versus the American versions which were brass strapped, and so Colt tried to unload the remaining inventory in to the American market (with limited success except for military purchases by the Navy). Specimens can be found both with the large triggerguards and also the small guards, both being quite scarce and a genuine variation for Colt collectors. Unfortunately this Navy does suffer from poor storage and/or usage to where it has scattered overall medium to heavy pitting, but it does have good amounts of cylinder scene remaining and relatively decent grips. The action tends to be “sticky” and could use some minor gunsmithing, but is functioning and the bore is decent…about a “6” on a scale of 10. It is NOT militarily marked, but is simply a scarce Navy that would be a great “entry level” revolver of this particular model. Good/Good+ as described. $1395
