Description: Factory engraved Southerner Derringer pistol. Manufactured Brown Manufacturing Co. and Merrimack Arms Company from 1866 to 1873 with a total production of about 16,500. 41 RF, 2 1/2" octagon barrel with nickel finish and antique ivory grips. Serial #3413. This Derringer has an iron frame and it estimated that only about 30% of the total production were iron framed. This Derringer features factory floral scroll and punch dot engraving on the side barrel flats and frame. There is a simple wavy line and two wire borders on the muzzle, and the upper barrel flats and back strap have simple wire, dot and star patterns. The top barrel flat is marked "SOUTHERNER." There are no manufacturer markings. The matching serial number apperas on the butt, bottom of the barrel and on the extractor rod. The Derringer is nickel plated, and the trigger and hammer were case hardened. The barrel pivots sideways to load, and there is an extractor mounted on the underside of the barrel. Brass blade front, no rear sight, checkered hammer, smooth spur trigger and fitted with smooth grips. Excellent condition. The Derringer retains 97% original nickel finish with some minor flaking behind the trigger well and pin prick type pitting on the top of the barrel. There is some scattered minor "frosting" of the finish. There are strong traces of the original faded case colors on the hammer in protected areas, otherwise the hammer and trigger have a smooth brownish gray patina. The grips are excellent with pleasant caramel streaked aging and a small nick on the bottom of the right panel. The barrel marking is clear. The engraving is crisp. Mechanically excellent.
