Description:
#1504 Mass Arms - Wesson & Levitt’s Patent Belt Model, 5”x.31cal percussion revolver produced 1851-1857 with approx 1000 total manufactured. Prior to this, Mass Arms lost a patent infringement law suit with Sam Colt and that halted any further production of all the Mass arms previous self turning cylinder models of this very early Colt competitor. So after losing their butts in the expensive law suit, in order to stay in business, Mass Arms removed the Colt patented self-revolving cylinder portion and returned to a hand-turned cylinder. However, they also made it with the Maynard tape-primed system as well as being able to still take loose caps and used as a primer capped model. This is a original CASED set with the correct accruedrements, including a Mass Arms flask, Springfield Arms marked brass bullet mold (which being another same period company, they obviously had some symbionic relationship with Mass Arms since both revolvers are very similar in design), an unmarked nipple wrench and an empty cap container. The revolver is mechanically completely functional, the exterior has about 90% coverage of a 75-80% density glass-blue finish and about 85-90% excellent cylinder etched scene. The missing portions of finish are due to having been left for MANY years in this casing and the humidity dampness caused rust spots on the barrel and cylinder, some of which MAY be able to be removed with soaking in clean white kerosene. Rather than to babble on and on about the near excellent finish on this scarce revolver, I will leave that to the photos. But I will note this historical fact, that 200 of THIS model Mass Arms (one fifth of the entire run) was sold to the abolitionist John Brown in 1857 ….and along with his also being armed with a good amount of 1853 Sharps carbines, Brown made a pretty successful attack on the federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (…well, in retrospect, it was not really a TOTAL success, since Brown was captured, tried for treason, and his skinny ole body was hung by the neck until dead). Anyway, this is a spectacular cased set and a fraction of the cost of a similar set that was ed off at Rock Island s on Dec. 2nd, 2018. That set fetched a handsome sum of $25,875!! This handsome set can grace your collection for the paltry sum of $5750!
