Description:
A Maynard primed 1851 Sharps octagon barrel sporting rifle in 44 caliber percussion. This is a very rare factory engraved gun. The Robbins and Lawrence factory was just across the river from the prison and the engraving was done by a prisoner who was in for engraving counterfeiting plates. Factory engraved sporting rifles are very rare with only 3 or 4 known to collectors.

Condition-- Dark age patina with some pitting.
The wood is dark with many marks and dings but has never been sanded or refinished. The Maynard priming mechanism is missing the small leaf spring that advances the caps.The bore has strong rifling with some minor roughness. This is a good honest example of a very rare gun that saw heavy use.
