1903 COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER Model 1878 .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION Revolver C&R .44-40 WCF Colt 6-Shooter
Description: 1903 COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER Model 1878 .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION Revolver C&R .44-40 WCF Colt 6-Shooter Here we present a C&R Colt Model 1878 Double Action Frontier Revolver, made in 1903 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt's factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. The 1878 Frontier was a much larger and more reliable version of the Model 1877 Lightning and Thunderer, Colt’s first double action revolver. The 1878 Frontier also offered a much more comprehensive array of calibers, compared to the 1877’s three offerings. Despite all of this, the Model 1877 was clearly the popular favorite as over 166,000 were produced versus 51,210 of the Model 1878 made between 1878 through 1907. Out of the 51,210 Model 1878 revolvers made, 4,600 were made for the United States Ordnance Department in 1902 and known as the “Philippine” models. They were intended to equip the Philippine Constabulary in the Philippine Insurrection. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG.CO./HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The side is marked “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER”. This example would be great in a wild west or late 19th century collection. The overall condition is good. Nice patina. The action (hammer/trigger) is strong in double action and single action. The cylinder indexes and locks up in double action mode, but the does not lock up in single action mode. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The numbers match. The grips are worn and scuffed but otherwise solid. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 5-1/2 inches. Caliber: .44-40 WCF Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING. Will need to be sent to your local FFL or C&R licensee. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2000 #220658 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
