Description:
EARLY W. H. HORSTMANN (PHILADELPHIA) MOUNTED OFFICER’S SWORD AND SCABBARD CA. 1820’S. 38” o/a with 32” gilded and blued blade signed in a gilded arched panel at the langet “W. H. HORSTMANN CIE.” Fine plus overall and all original with the original wire and leather grip wrap. Excellent blade with original gilt and blue remaining. Fine martial motif engraving with gilt highlights. Steel scabbard and hilt with patinated original plum blue finish. Earliest Horstmann we know of may dating to the early 1820’s or earlier just after Horstmann set up in Philadelphia as a cloth merchant and uniform maker and certainly an import (Klingenthal) before he purchased Widmann in about 1830. Extra nice from Philadelphia’s best known sword maker.
