Designed by John M. Browning, the 1886 provided the public with a rifle which was both structurally stronger than the earlier Model 1876 and chambered for the popular .45-70 round. One of the 1876’s few flaws, one which it shared with its predecessor, the 1873, was the receiver’s side plates. In terms of design, these left the receivers with little strength compared to the more “solid” designs used by the Model 1886 and later the 1892. The other issues were the toggle link action and elevator-style carrier. These were originally designed for the pistol-caliber cartridges used in the Model 1873. Their use in the 1876 limited the action’s ability to handle stronger cartridges. This was one of the reasons why the .45-75 and its siblings were created and the idea of chambering for the .45-70 were dropped. John Browning solved this problem by using a locking block action. Thanks to this, the ’86 chambered some of the more powerful cartridge of the period, the action’s strength even allowing it to make the transition from black powder to smokeless powder with a simple change to the use of a nickel-steel barrel. On top of the .45-70, the ’86 was also initially chambered for the .45-90 WCF and .40-82 WCF. Later, the .33 WCF, .38-56 WCF, .38-70 WCF, .40-65 WCF, .40-70 WCF, and .50-110 Winchester were added to the list. Some of these cartridges fell by the wayside fairly quickly, but many of these were listed in the Winchester ammo catalogs as late as 1935. Today, reproductions of the 1886 are usually chambered for the .45-70. The example shown here is the Taylor’s Boarbuster. These are actually built by the famous Pedersoli of Italy to Taylor’s specifications and imported by them into the U.S. The Boarbuster has a few features not found on an original 1886 rifle. It can be thought of as an old rifle being built for the modern era. The barrel is 19.0 inches long and has a threaded muzzle for attaching a muzzle brake or suppressor. Thread rate is the standard 5/8-24 found on threaded .45-caliber pistol barrels. A picatinny rail is mounted to the barrel for mounting a long eye-relief scope or red dot optic, but also has a built-in green fiber optic rear sight. Front sight is a red fiber optic mounted atop a ramp base. The stock and fore end are checkered walnut, with the former a pistol-grip type rather than the straight grip stock found on original 1886 rifles. The receiver has a nice color case hardened finish while the barrel has a high luster blue finish. This rifle is new in the box and ready to go. A good scope would make a nice addition.
