Description:
With a .65/.66 cal, 9 1/2” round barrel with a lightly oxidized bore. The barrel and lockplate of this pistol are mostly a mild gunmetal and gray-brown patina showing some sparse fine pitting and oxidation staining that is relatively minor. The breech shows two very strong period proof marks and the lockplate shows some simple line bordering and is marked only “WARRANTED”. The pistol is converted with drum and nipple method, the bolster also with some light embellishments, and the original flintlock plate was utilized for the conversion. Brass fittings include the nosecap, tailpipe, triggerguard with simple finial, buttcap and flat sideplate all toned to an attractive ocher patina. The smooth walnut stock remains in very fine condition showing a few thin drying cracks, light dings and handling marks, the edges and fit otherwise quite nice overall and the stock maintains an attractive appearance with some rather nice subtle straight grain figure as well. The top of the grip shows a period marking “W / 38”, what is likely the original steel ramrod is present and the lock seems to function crisply.These were imported before and during the Civil War and often issued to Naval units, and many times the maker name was scrubber.A rather attractive British pistol for the antique arms collector.
