Notes: This muzzleloader was custom built by the late Steve Mackrill of the Republic of South Africa around 1974. While researching the firearm, we contacted Mr. Mackrill's wife via email. She provided us with quite a bit of information about the rifle. Here are the pertinent excerpts from her reply:

"Steve’s first love was shooting and guns. He was very artistic and always made guns. I believe he made guns from a very young age, although they were modern. He was a .22 pistol champion in Freestyle and Silhouette. In his later years started making knives, a tradition which his son is carrying on, each very well known in their own right.

Firstly I must tell you that the muzzleloader was completely handmade inside and out, except for the barrel which was imported from Liege.

From what I can remember Steve actually made that muzzleloader for himself,  which he used. He belonged to a black powder club. He even made the elevation site.

The stock was made from Walnut imported from England, and all the fittings are in silver. He did the engraving and checkering and all the inlays himself. The inlays are in Ivory, Ebony and Brass, and of course silver for the eagle.
Although numbered 100, he only made a very few muzzleloaders, if my memory serves me, I think five.

One of his great friends was named Louis Lapperman, to whom I think he gave the muzzleloader. He had a daughter. He his brother plus families went to live in the USA and Florida, as far as I can remember, and Steve made a number of percussion guns for him.

Should you want to know anything re price, I am afraid there I have no idea. It is obviously a replica, although a one off and one of a kind. He made the black powder guns both flintlock and percussion exactly to model and scale, but each was individually inlaid differently. His personal touch.

I was very happy to see how well kept it was.

Should I remember anything else pertaining to the gun, I will contact you.

Kind Regards,
Michele Mackrill"
