Description:

Very scarce Palmetto pistol.  The Palmetto Armory was formed by William Glaze and Benjamin Flagg.  They produced 1,000 pistols exclusively for the South Carolina militia in 1852-53.  There is strong support that Glaze did not produce these weapons but acquired over-run and condemned parts from Aston and Johnson and merely finished and marked the completed pistols.  54 caliber, smoothbore 8-1/2” round barrel with brass bladed front sight.
CONDITION: This example has a nicely struck “PALMETTO ARMORY/S*C” and the palmetto tree forward of the hammer.  “COLUMBIA/SC 1852” to the rear of the hammer.  The barrel has “Wm. GLAZE & CO.” along with “P” and “V” ahead of the palmetto tree.  The tang is correctly dated 1853.  The nipple has been welded to the bolster.  The wood is in excellent shape – just minor dings and scratches from 170 years of circulation.  Overall, this is a fine Palmetto pistol (barring the welded nipple – which could easily be corrected if desired).  Considered a secondary Confederate arm.
This gun was once part of Dr. Fred Novy’s collection.  Dr. Novy is the undisputed expert on Palmetto arms and along with this gun comes his detailed assessment sheet. This is a 100% original Palmetto backed by Dr. Novy’s blessing – it doesn’t get any better that this!
