U.S. MODEL 1896 KRAG JORGENSEN CUTDOWN BAYONET FIGHTING KNIFE, DATED 1897. U.S. fighting units modified use of Krag bayonet often with filled lug channel filled with lead(like this one) that made a nicely balanced hand to hand combat knife once altered. See "Bayonets-From Janzen's Notebook"(page 218). This one is 11" overall with 6 1/3" sharpened blade. Crisp US and 1897 opposite each other on ricassos. Perfect inletting from wood to metal with solid rivets. Old patina on metal and lead fill attest to it's authenticity. Span-Am or WWI use. Fun addition to fighting knife collection or display.
