#12537, Gebruder Merkel, Suhl - Germany: A 12 Bore Merkel from Suhl in Model 301E Made in 1926 on a Best 300 Series Action with a Kersten top lock plus double underlugs with double bite, All 200 Series Actions did not have a bottom locking bolt with a double bite into the double underlugs, A High Quality O/U Boxlock Ejector Game Gun, 29 1/2” Ejector Krupp Lussstahl Steel Solid Rib barrels, .717 .041 & .041" (Full & Full), Original 2 3/4" chambers and so marked, Wall thickness on the top barrel at .034" & .031 on the bottom barrel, Double triggers, Scalloped frame, Cocking indicators, Bolstered frame, Intercepting safety sears, 3 piece game forend, Pistol grip stock at 14 1/2 x 1 5/8 x 3" over an added 1" Pachmayr pad, 7 lbs. 13 oz., 70% coverage of period scroll engraving, Nice wood with very nice black/brown color & contrast, 4 locking screws on key screws, Sling swivels, Horn trigger guard with the tang going all the way to the Horn sunburst grip cap, Shadowline cheekpiece, After 97 years it remains in very solid condition, It has 98% barrel blue but I feel it has been very professionally reblacked as all the legends and engraving remain sharp, 20% original case colors remain, The breech face has 90% case colors remaining, Original stock finish is at 90-92%, The checkering is at 97%, The bores and chambers are excellent and totally free of any pits, It remains smack on the face, It must have lived a long life in Germany as it was again proofed after 1973 at the proof house in Ulm, Germany. This is a very solid 1926 O/U from the great Merkel family from the renowned city of Suhl. In the hand, the balance, the feel, the craftsmanship, the engraving, the wood, the grace, and style make it a very nice shooting device.
