Description:
1816 North.  (#186) Simeon North of Middletown, CT, produced 19,374 Model 1816 Flintlock Pistols for the U.S. Army between 1817 and 1820. The prior model was the 1813. The redesign of the Model 1816 consisted of reducing the caliber from .69 to .54  and extending the stock beyond the barrel band.  The contract was renegotiated for the remaining 19,374 pistols to be built in the improved design at $8.00 each and the U.S. Model 1816 Army Contract Pistol was "born". Simeon North would complete the entire contract with the last deliveries made on January 26, 1820.  The Model 1816 proved to be an excellent pistol for the period, well-made, reliable, and reasonably accurate for a smoothbore.  It would remain in U.S. service for the next two decades, serving the U.S. in the Mexican-American War, the Seminole Wars and the Civil War. As with most Model 1816’s, this pistol has been converted to percussion. No markings are visible on the lock as the entire pistol was nickel plated when converted for sea service.  The nickel plating is flaking overall.  The barrel is marked P over US at the breech.  The stock is in very good condition with sharp edges, no cracks or chips, and the outline of a cartouche on the left flat. The action functions correctly. This is the first Model 1816 I’ve seen nickel plated.  If only this one could ‘talk’!
