It originated in the Middle Eastern, Ottoman, Arab, North African Empires. It was devised as a way to aid in directing an animal other than by rein, so hands could remain free during battle. It dates from the late 18th to 19th Century. It has a “U” shaped heelband, a molded neck and a characteristically long spike.
