This Colt New Service revolver is what is commonly referred to as a "Battle of Britain" gun. Following the British defeat at Dunkirk and the associated huge loss of small arms, England was desperate to rearm for the expected Nazi invasion. With Winchester acting as the purchasing agent, the British government placed an order with Colt for "all available handguns suitable for military use". The order was filled with guns ranging from Colt Government Model .45's to Colt Single Action Army revolvers. Among those arms were many of the sturdy New Service revolvers, such as this example. Fortunately for Britain and the rest of the world, the Nazi invasion did not materialize. This New Service revolver is chambered for the .38 Special cartridge and wears a 4-inch barrel. It has an arsenal phosphate type finish that is in generally very good condition. There are some handling marks and high edge wear. There is no pitting. The various factory markings are still legible as is the lone British proof with Broad Arrow ownership marking on the left rear of the frame (there are none of the commercial British proofs seen on those guns that were subsequently sold onto the retail market). There are NO import markings on the gun. This revolver is virtually identical to one shown in Timothy Mullin's book "Colt's New Service Revolver - A Particularly Strong, Heavy Weapon", at the beginning of chapter twenty which covers "The Battle of Britain Colts". A neat piece of military history from a pivotal time in world events. We do not have a Colt letter in hand, only confirmation from Beverly Colt as to its configuration and shipping location.
