Description:
This pistol was manufactured by the Mauser factory for Nazi police in the Bavarian Police District of Lindau- a small district near the border of Austria. Outside of the “44” date suggested, the “byf” code is for Mauserwerk, Oberndorf, Germany 1942-1945 manufacturing period. There is no import mark.
The pistol shows little wear but it does not appear certain of original finish.  Rating on appearance, the pistol is 100%.  The slides are clear of wear, the firing pin does not look used, the barrel is bright with strong channels, the grain lines in the metal appear untouched in horizontal parallel finish (no grinding to remove rust etc) but there is only a slight red showing on the “F” and on the right side of frame there are a few very small marks under the finish suggesting something was added to the finish or the original metal was not smooth- don’t know which.
Internet “experts” contend that the WWII Nazi P38 pistols that are police marked number between 450 to 800- a small number but those numbers do not specify which police district.  Each district has a separate code identification and separate rarity number. The “L” designation indicates the Bavarian Police District of Lindau with a WWII population of 2456 persons (1946 calculation) . [See, T. Lapin, “Mauser Military Rifle Markings”, p.158, “German Police District Codes”: “German Police Unit Marks, 1920-1937” at- “Bavarian State Police Unit Marks, 1930”]  Lindau is a Very small police dept.
The condition of this pistol is excellent plus. The grips are in excellent condition with a nice matching color overall with very minor handling marks. It does not appear to have had much use.  No rust or corrosion appear anywhere. The interior springs and parts are bright original metal.
P38 police pistols did not follow the military number system. Because of small numbers there was no suffix number range.  The extremely rare Nazi [swastika] eagle over “L” police mark [Lindau] is on the right side slide with the Mauser Eagle/WaA135, Waffenamt proof.  The left side of the slide is also BYF over 44 marked with the Eagle/N commercial proof.  The serial number (3438) stamped on the left of frame in front of the safety lever. All numbers of this pistol match the Mauser slide serial number.
The mix of Waffenamt and commercial/police proofs is due to the fact that Waffenamt inspected components were made available to police inspectors based on requirements at the time. All parts began as military components. The left side of the barrel lug and frame both have a single Eagle WaA135 Waffenamt proof. The front of the barrel is numbered "3438".  The locking block is also stamped with last three numbers (438) on the underside of the breech block. The proper grips have P/1528 and 1529/2 [in lower circle] and proper Hersteller-Zeichen symbol in upper circle.
Both magazines carry the Mauser WAA135 proof. The holster is vintage police style difficult to date.  It is a quality holster with no stitching or function issues.  On the backside the code 12-120-6169 together with the manufacturer Meyer Gronau of Germany.  The condition of the holster is consistent with that of the pistol.
