Starr Bonifacio Echeverria S. A. Model PD .45 ACP caliber single action semi automatic pistol, 6 shot magazine, blue finish, walnut checkered grips, alloy frame for light weight, made in Eibar, Spain between 1975 and 1990, barrel length = 4.0 inches, SN = 1366534, blade front sight, rear sight is a fully adjustable leaf with an open notch, manual thumb safety, no grip safety, includes one original magazine. Imported into the US by Interarms of Alexandria, VA.
Proof markings are found on the left side of the grip frame underneath the wood grip. This gun passed the proof test in 1975. On this gun, the manual thumb safety can be applied with the hammer in the down position. This blocks both the slide and the hammer from being pulled to the rear. This feature is not found on the Colt M1911.
This is a compact and lightweight semi-automatic pistol. The Model PD was very popular with police and civilian users in the self-defense and backup gun role, especially in the United States.
The Star PD improved on its predecessor (Star Model PKM) by using a low-profile adjustable rear sight and by removing material from the slide and other small changes. These modifications, combined with its aluminum alloy frame construction, resulted in a slim, compact, lightweight and relatively powerful pistol, revolutionary for the time. As it also bore an external resemblance to the well-known M1911 pistol, the gun sold very well in the U.S. until it was replaced in 1990 by the Firestar M45.
This pistol began the trend towards the production by other manufacturers of compact 1911-style pistols, which continues to the present day.
The Star Model PD was generally very well liked, and still has a strong following among some firearms enthusiasts. Very popular in the US as a back-up gun for police officers because it is light weight and easy to conceal.
It is a common misconception that "PD" stands for "Police Department," however, "PD" is actually the initials for Pete Dickey who submitted the idea for the Star PD to Star Bonafacia, in Spain.
Very lightly fired. Overall, bore, blue finish, color case hardened hammer, and wood grips are in "used like new" condition. One very small nick in the left side wood grip near the slide stop (see photo).
Includes original factory plastic box with end label that matches the serial number of this gun. The plastic box is in excellent condition. Owner's manual and repair parts list with exploded view of the gun also included.
