#5000, Ross 1905 Mark II** Civilian Target Rifle Straight-Pull Caliber .303 British Serial #5000, "Ross Rifle Co. Quebec, Canada 1905", Made about 1912, 30 1/2" Barrel, Complete with a BSA Martin Target Aperture Fully Adjustable fold up peep sight (British patent # 5992/08) mounted on the receiver bridge at the factory, It has an adjustable aperture eyepiece that threads into the BSA vernier sight, The barrel sight base is a universal Enfield without a wind gauge, Canadian proof marks on the barrel cylinder along with the serial #5000, Band front sight with a sight protector hood, A barrel band 6" from the muzzle with a swivel and a bayonet lug, Another barrel band 18" from the muzzle with a sling swivel, Another sling swivel at the front of the trigger guard, No sling swivel on the buttstock, Hand guards on top of the barrel from the barrel cylinder to 10" forward, A push down Harris lever on the right side of the stock that depresses the follower for dump loading, It holds 5 cartridges, Double cross bolts, 13 13/16" LOP over a steel buttplate with a sliding trap door for storage, 9 lbs. 13 oz., Select wood, Overall this piece remains in very nice overall condition with an excellent bore. Interesting serial number at 5000, it could have been a Presentation rifle from a target competition. It comes with a complete package of copies from articles written on The Ross rifles, Sir Charles Ross, Model variations, Mechanics, Features, and a lot of history.
Sir Charles Ross was born in 1872 in Scotland and was the Ninth Baronet of Balnagown. He was the Lord and Master of 350,000 acres with 3000 tenants. He was one of the wealthiest men in all of Britain. He took out his first rifle patent in 1893 and in 1896 he had Lancaster make and market a straight-pull rifle. He came to Canada in 1897 and the Canadian Ross rifle started life in 1901 and commenced operations in 1903. At Bisley in 1909 the Mark II** Match Target won it all and beat all the World's rifles. On July 16, 1909, the New York Herald declared the Ross "Champion of the Year". The Mark II** Model became the official rifle of Canada's armed forces in 1911. Sir Charles Ross died in Florida in 1942.
