Please read below some historical facts about the pistol and Mauser Contract with the Italian Navy (circa 1899). The Royal Italian Navy contract in 1899 was for 5000 Pistols and they served well past WWI and saw service in the WWII era. These Pistols were very useful to the Italian Navy in small boat operations against the Austrians in the Adriatic. Very few pistols survived the two wars & those remaining estimated at being 2000 were either destroyed or dumped at sea. In 1899, the Italian government ordered Mauser's first major military contract; an order for 5,000 C96 pistols for the Italian Royal Navy.[15] They differ in that their receivers are "slab-sided" (i.e., lacked the milling on the sides found on commercial Mausers). They also have a "ring hammer" (spurless hammer with a hole through its head) instead of the early "cone hammer" (spurless hammer with ribbed cone-like projections on the sides of its head). These guns had their own serial number range, running from 1 to 5000. Mostly all Italian C96 Mauser Navy contract pistols with Shoulder-Stocks were not numbered.
