Note:
Unlike Colt, Remington has no shipping records.  This is one of a very few, where we know the identity of a former owner!

The E. Remington Company received a contract from Egypt for 10,000 of their M1875 revolvers.  These were to be in 44 Remington caliber, with 7-1/2” barrels, military blue finish, and walnut stocks.  Unfortunately, Egypt fell behind in payments, and Remington sold them in commercial and government markets.

In 1881 Remington introduced this model in 44-40 caliber.  Unlike the first 10,000 with serial numbers, these were batch numbered.  The batch number on this one is #556, the number found underneath the left grip.  Production of the M1875 ended prior to 1888.

This particular gun shows indications of early Police usage.  The number found under the left grip on the frame, was stamped on the bottom of the left grip.  When a police agency does inventory, they do not want to remove the grips to see that frame number.  We know that the U.S. government bought about 600 Remington M1875’s for Indian Police on several western reservations.  These were bought over a period between the late 1870’s and mid-1880’s.  Some had lanyard rings, while others did not.  The earliest had “pinched post” front sights, while those after 1880 had blade sights.  A large supply of spare parts were also ordered, as much-later discovered at Bannerman’s Island in New York.  Bannerman’s had been buying U.S. Government surplus military weapons and accoutrements for decades, as early as the 1870’s.

This gun also has a later known history, as indicated by the inscription on the butt.  That butt is deeply stamped “U. S. Earl / Flora” in a very old font.

The Sept 15, 1899 Olney (IL) Advocate – reported “Mr. Ulysses S. Earl of Flora, IL and Miss Anna E. Glaser (McCracken) of Washington, IN were married Sept 21, 1899”.

June 1900 Census – U. S. Earl (born Jan 1867 in WV) “Saloon Keeper” in Flora, Clay Co., IL.  Earl remained as a saloon proprietor at the Flora location through 1907.  This dates the inscription as being 1907 or earlier.  Since he was only 33 in 1900, most likely his saloon activity dates to the early 1890’s.

On Dec 5, 1908 Daviess County Democrat – reported that Ulysses S. Earl applied for a liquor license, and describes his saloon in Montgomery, Daviess Co., Indiana.

The April 12, 1909 Champaign (IN) Daily News revealed that “Ulysses S. Earl was sued for the “accidental death” of young Roy Thompson, after the latter became intoxicated”.

Earl was fined and arrested a number of times for illegal activities.  As late as June 15, 1922 the Indianapolis Star noted that “U. S. Earl was fined $300 and sentenced to 60 days prison time for violating liquor laws”.  This was by no means his first offense.

Ulysses S. Earl died on Feb 12, 1942 in Washington, Daviess Co., Indiana, USA.

This gun is all-original, except for the properly-replaced cylinder pin.  Many, if not most, of these M1875’s are found to be missing a functional cylinder pin latch.  The long cylinder pin has a narrow milled slot near the front, which contains a spring that latches into the ejector housing.  That spring is often found to be missing or broken.

The batch number 556 is found underneath the left grip, on the gate, and on the rear trigger guard (in a hidden place on a tab tucked under the frame).  All other parts were intended to be interchangeable, requiring no assembly number.  The barrel is clearly marked “E. Remington & Sons, Ilion N.Y. USA”.  The “44” on the left trigger guard designated 44-40 caliber.

The single action mechanism functions as it should with safety, half cock, and full cock hammer notches in proper places.  The lock bolt does drop a bit early, but slides into the cylinder lock notch ahead.  The cylinder lock-up tightness is as expected on a Remington that has seen average usage.  The bore has strong five-groove rifling with only expected scattered areas of pitting.  On a scale of 1 to 10, this M1875 is easily rated a 7 bore.

This M1875 retains about 40% original nickel, with most being on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, hammer, and trigger guard.

The grips on this gun remain in nice condition, with only scattered nicks, and no significant wood losses.

Because this is a pre-1899 manufacture, I can ship this revolver directly to the buyer.
