We are super proud to offer this fine example of Winchester's single shot, the 1885. This one is decked out in deluxe trim, with 2X walnut, checkering, and capped pistol grip. The special order also specified a number 2 weight octagonal barrel, set trigger, and midrange target sights. She is chambered in .22 Long Rifle, All of these features are verified by the Cody Museum letter. The 1885 was the first John Browning design purchased by Winchester, and it allowed Winchester to compete in the very popular long range match shooting that raged from 1871 to 1917. Formerly dominated by Stevens, Remington, Sharps, Ballard, and Maynard, the 1885 hit the ground running and proved itself worthy of top honors in short order. Major Ned Roberts, the inventor of the famed .257 Roberts, stated that the 1885 was "the most reliable, strongest, and altogether best single shot rifle ever produced". This particular rifle was made in the year of our Lord 1896. She is in good condition for being 127 years old. The barrel has strong blue, drifting to patina, and has few light handing marks and silvered out edges. The bore is quite good for a 22 rimfire of that era, with lots of shine and strong rifling. The number 2 weight barrel is quite stout for this wee rimfire. The action is smooth and crisp, with tight lockup. The nicely figured walnut is all there, with only minor handling marks. The tang mounted mid range sight is also very good, with graduations still visible. These sights are quite valuable, fetching the better part of a thousand dollars when sold alone. In addition to the folding rear barrel mounted sight, a small level is also present. Total production was only about 140 thousand for these very purposeful guns. The selection of barrel lengths, weights, calibers, stock configuarations, and sight arrangements was the widest of all Winchesters, making this a favorite of collectors. While all of them are valuable, the deluxe versions command the highest prices. If you have been looking for the right Winchester 1885 to collect, or for investment, but want the added clout of a Cody lettered deluxe with added features, then look no further.
