Description:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are sterling proud to offer this truly unique example of craftsmanship by the king of gunmakers, Sir Joseph Manton. He was a proven genius of invention on many levels. Not only in guns, but he invented a more accurate ship's clock that ran in a vaccuum, not affected by varying air densities and levels of humidity. He also applied a sealed vacuum to telescopes, which we still use, today. He patented the raised top rib, which nearly every shotgun has still has. Despite that genius, he spent nearly 3 years in debtors' prison. Virtually all of his guns have gained collector status, but they are hard to come by. In my humble opinion, the Manton name is the most stepped on in the gun market. While later products of the "Manton and Company" were often of lower quality, many others are Belgium made and simply have "Manton" stamped on them. Therefore, it is good to know that this particular set is listed in "The Mantons:Gunmakers". This fine set, made in the year of our Lord 1837 or 1838, which is about the last years Joseph Manton guns were produced. It is a percussion gun, featuring Manton's patented hammers with removable strikers. The platinum relief plugs are another Manton trademark. Attention to detail is where this gunmaker really shines. The 14 bore shotgun barrels are fitted with a wooden ramrod, with a large belled end held in place by an equally large stop. The rifle barrels are equipped with a metal rod, and a much smaller stop. The 4 leaf folding sights are just darling, a prize feature on any rifle. The bores are very good, with deep rifling, and are .54 caliber.  Also, the book lists both barrels at 32 inches and made by Hollis and Sheath.. The rifle barrels are 32 inches overall, and the shotgun barrels are 30 inch tubes mounted to the hooked solid portion. Both fit snugly in the maker's case, telling me all is original. The muzzles are nicely finished with keels, and both barrels fit like a glove inside the maker's case. The top tray is shorter and holds the action and shotgun barrels. The bottom tray holds the rifle barrels. The icing on the cake is the fine set of accessories found in the case. Among them is a fine Irish style shot snake, in double form, no less. The tiny scoops fully detach for loading, and each has 3 volumes to choose from. The case itself is high quality, with dovetailed corners and original swinging hasps to secure the lid. This set is in fine condition for being 185 years old. The hammers are strong, the action works well, and all 4 bores are quite good. The highly figured walnut has only light handling marks, and the checkering is good. Now, for the inscription. The barrels read like a Christmas card, permanently showing one man's respect for another. My research indicates that Edwin Robert Peete married Jane Eleanor Taylor. Her brother was Samuel T. Taylor, later to become a Captain Taylor of the Tennessee 7th Regiment Cavalry, formed in 1862. While this fine set was presented many years before the Civil War, it is still a treasure that belonged to a CSA officer. All that said, this makes this one of the most special and unique Joseph Manton guns ever produced. If you believe you are the premier Manton collector of our day, then step forward and claim your prize.
