Description:
This is the 2nd variant DGFM-FMAP MODELO 1909; Gendarmeria Nacional (GN) 1909/47 Cavalry Carbine; MATCHING, only 405 (or 505) made from 1949 to 1959. G.N. on the receiver ring. 7.65 x 53 ARGENTINE. Original Correct Military Configuration. It comes with a CORRECT VARIANT MATCHING "GN" marked BAYONET/SCABBARD (not matching to the rifle).
I am not sure how many where imported to USA out of the 400-500.
Special note to consider: Although Collin Webster's book is the finest and very best available source of knowledge on Argentine Mausers; the book is not complete nor ALL CORRECT; many errors, mistakes and omissions can be found. There is conflicting information on the section of the 1909/47 "GN" carbines and Bayonets also; calling 1st and second Variants on carbines, 1st and 2nd model on the bayonets (that would correspond to the carbines). Incorrect information also mentioning the range of the SN on carbines and bayos again. In my opinion, I don't agree with Webster description of the "Gendarmeria Nacional" on the SIDE of the receiver as I have never see one anywhere. I do own a 1909 Carbine with GN on the receiver ring/rack-inventory number under GN (same as the bayonets "GN and the sn); and the other variation having the Argentine Crest on the receiver ring and "Gendarmeria Nacional" under the Crest (all this have the Prefix letter "A" on the Carbines and the Bayonets). Either way if you want to call it 1st or 2nd variant, still very scarce 400-500 made.
From my personal collection: Overall very good condition. This is all original correct military configuration. ALL matching numbers on the side of the receiver, barrel, bolt, trigger guard floor plate and woodstock. The receiver as well as the woodstaock have a matching double number; where the 014956 is the SN and the 00806 is a Border Patrol rack number. I see NO rust or pitting anywhere; however I noticed a few freckles spots on the bolt handle. The metal is in excellent shape, very clean, what looks to me original bluing is dark rich with some loss fading to an even pleasing plumb patina specially on exposed upper part of the barrel, magazine floor-trigger guard, bolt stop, and barrel band;  little edge wear like on the nose cap, sling bar and rear sight elevator; normal scratches. Buttplate very clean,  in great shape, in  the  white as it should be with tiny aging spots, marks, scratches. Rear sight looks good original blue with white background. Bolt and receiver very clean, bright on the white as it should be in very fine condition. BOLT FACE clean with NO pitting, NO ring around firing pin hole, like it has not been shoot much! Nice crisp, deep, GN and GDFM FMAP markings. Wood stock is very dark brown walnut; SOLID with no cracks, no repairs and tiny chip by the upper screw on the sling bar, toe  and front edge handguard; with handling marks,  small dents, scratches and bruises. The handguard has same shade tone of rest of the wood stock in very good condition. To the naked eye,the BORE is EXCELLENT, MIRROR BRIGHT, SHINY, clean with STRONG lands and groves,  as mentioned like it has not been shot much and well taking care of! There is a tiny, very discreet  import mark on the right  rear of the receiver by the wood line and right bayonet lug barrel band. Action appears to be mechanically nice and tight in good working order.
GN BAYONET/SCABBARD: ARGENTINE 4th model 1st Variant 1909/47 BAYONET WITH MATCHING SCABBARD, GN (GENDARMERIA NACIONAL- BORDER PATROL); ONLY 500 MADE
This bayonet is well documented on Argentine Mauser Rifles by Colin Webster and "Bayonetas de la Republica Argentina" by Albino and Suffriti.
On page 23 of the "BAYONETAS de la REPUBLICA ARGENTINA book  the following is documented;" C. La Gendarmeria Nacional adquirio 500 sables bayoneta con grabaciones y numeraciones especiales no consiguiendo la documentacion consultada como eran esas grabaciones. Ademas adquirio 405 sables bayoneta grabados con la marca de fabrica y la leyenda GN (Gendarmeria Nacional).
On page 174, 175 Of the ARGENTINE MAUSER RIFLES by Colin Webster mentions the same information describing the bayonet with the Argentine Crest, letter A prefix from A00001 to A00500, showing a picture on page 175.
Condition: Excellent condition, original vintage Argentine Model 1909 made in Argentina by DGFM FMAP, instead of Germany to go with the Argentine made 1909 GN carbine. NO  rust; very clean bayo. CRISP detailed Argentine Coat of Arms, GN and DGFM FMAP marking. Blade has a beautiful original bright finish with light minimal imperfections with some grease remaining.. The edge of the blade has never been sharpened and might have few microscopic nicks. Remaining metal finish on crossguard and pommel is original bright with a light brownish pleasant even patina, scratches, handling marks, tiny bruises. The rivets are in great condition and the press release button works properly. Wood grips are in great shape, wood scales are thigh and they have the original finish with NO cracks, NO chips, NO gauges, just the usual scratches-handling marks and bruises. Matching numbered steel scabbard has a couple of tiny circular dings, scratches/handling marks, NO dents; original bluing with thinning, fading, loss of finish (loss on the frog stud also), edge wear,  with some aging darker spots, there might five a few very fine pits under the dark spots towards the top. The scabbard fits nice and thigh as it should be; springs up just a bit. The throat rivets are in place. Books pictures for reference only.
Overall what I consider a very nice example of a very rare 1909 Argentine variant GN GENDARMERIA NACIONAL (400-500 made) with all matching numbers and a GN BAYONET/SCABBARD (matched); very hard to find that would be a great addition to your collection; very hard to improve!!
