CIVIL WAR SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1816 PERCUSSION CONVERSION MUSKET ALTERATION TO CARBINE CA. 1860-64. 45” o/a with 29 ½” smoothbore .69 cal. barrel stamped at breech with “P/EAGLEHEAD/V” proofs as well as “S.M. Co.” for Springfield Manufacturing Company the original contract manufacturers of the barrel in the original length. All original and complete as a very probable Confederate alteration to carbine. Lock and barrel tang with original “1822” date and lock with standard Springfield Armory markings. Stock with two Federal flintlock era Ordnance cartouches. Excellent condition with beautiful grey-brown crisp metal patina and stock with near all the original finish and mint cartouches. Barrel alteration to carbine absolutely genuine and Arsenal altered of the period probably at the Richmond Armory. Original ramrod from the time of the alteration. Lock in working order and excellent bore. 100% original in every respect.
