Description:
Beautiful circa 1850 shoulder plate of the New England Guards.  This is the only example of this plate that I have ever seen listed for sale or in person, and I was very pleased when I added it to my collection.  The New England Guards were organized in 1812 and soon marched off to Salem to counter a threat by the British fleet.  For years they were part of the 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia.  At the beginning of the Civil War, they were Company A of the 4th Battalion and wore Chasseur uniforms. During the Civil War many members of the company became part of the 24th Massachusetts Infantry, known as the "New England Guard Regiment", and participated in Burnside's North Carolina expedition in 1861, engaging the Confederates at Roanoke Island, Morris Island, Fort Wagner, Petersburg, and other actions.  Other members joined the 9-month regiment 44th Massachusetts Infantry in 1862.  Pictured in Plate 750 in "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, this plate measures about 3 1/4" by 4 1/2" and is made of brass with a cast white metal shield bearing the letters "NEG" secured by 2 brass loops.  Maker name is stamped on the back "JAMES S. SMITH/MAKER NEW YORK"  Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return postage. Shipping charge $15.00 for Priority Mail insured. If you buy multiple items I will combine into one package to save you money on shipping.
