Description:
This is a Roby Type 1 cavalry officer saber (plain hilt, sharkskin grip, etched blade).  I've always preferred the etching of Roby swords over that of Ames.  The etching is typically deeper, looks more 3 dimensional, and in my opinion, more artistic.  Unlike many other makers of the time who used templates to create relatively uniform designs on their swords, each Roby sword appears to have been individually designed and etched, commonly incorporating natural elements such as vines, leaves, tendrils, flowers, thistles, and grape clusters along with military motifs.  On some Roby swords you can find the name of the engraver hidden in the etching, like an artist signing his painting.  I searched all over on this one and only came up with the initials "CR" on one of the flags.  While this could be the initials of the engraver, I think it more likely stands for the Christoper Roby company.  I especially like that most Roby cavalry officer blades, this one included, are etched with the letters "U.S.C." for United States Cavalry, as opposed to the regular generic "U.S.".  This saber shows use but was not badly abused.  The sharkskin wrap on the hilt has some wear and the blade is graying but with strong etching.  Someone has the cleaned the brass on the hilt and scabbard in recent years, and the lower 1/3 of the blade shows some slight sharpening. (It is interesting to note that the regimental history of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry indicates they sharpened all their blades.)  Overall this is a nice looking example of a rather rare sword.  Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Shipping cost $49.00 towards Priority Mail and insurance. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return postage. If you buy multiple items, I will combine shipping to save you money.
