Smith & Wesson Model 66-8 Combat Magnum .357 Magnum 2.75-inch New in Box
Description: The Model 66 started production in 1970 as a stainless-steel version of the Model 19, much like the 627 and 629 are stainless versions of the 27 and 29 respectively. As the Model 19 was sold under the name Combat Magnum for a while, the Model 66 was bestowed with a similar name with Stainless added into the title. The 66 was originally produced in 2.5-inch, 4-inch, and 6-inch variations, with the first having a round butt and the latter two with a square butt. This is a brand-new-in-box example of the latest version of the 66 design, known as the 66-8. It is different from early versions in a few regards. It has a 2-piece, 2-3/4” long barrel, ball-détente lock-up, pinned front sight, matte black finish on the controls, and internal safety lock. Otherwise, the 66-8 is similar to older models. Other features include a micrometer click rear sight, round butt grips, .312-inch smooth combat trigger, .375” semi-target hammer, and a full top strap and barrel serration. The Model 66 was designed to allow police officers to practice with the handgun using 38 Special, while carrying it with the 357 Magnum. Thusly, they would be equipped with a .357 revolver lighter than the larger N-frame Model 27, and one stronger than the original Model 19. That the 66 fulfilled its intended role well has been recorded in the annals of law enforcement history. It is one of the more fondly remembered revolvers from the 70s and 80s. The 66 has been used by such agencies as the Bureau of Alcohol Firearms and Tobacco (BATF, 4in barrel), several state Highway Patrols, and the Naval Investigative Service (NIS, predecessor to the famous NCIS).
