Description:
Antique Frank Wesson Second Type Two-Trigger Rifle, Description
Original Item. This is a very nice Frank Wesson .32 caliber octagon barrel single-shot breech loading carbine in good condition. It is a top-break design that features a 24.5" octagonal barrel, and this example bears serial number 2536 on the trigger guard.

The top of the barrel still bears standard barrel marking:
F. WESSON PATENT
OCT 25 1859 & NOV 11 1862

This carbine has a blade front sight, with an adjustable "flat top" rear sight.

Frank Wesson was the younger brother of Daniel B. Wesson, of Smith & Wesson, as well as Edwin Wesson, who was also a highly-esteemed gunsmith in the mid-to-late-1800s. The fame of his family’s name was not lost on Frank as he was a prolific firearms designer and maker in his own right. He was granted patents in 1859 and 1862 to began producing rifles of this two-trigger configuration. The Civil War was a fantastic opportunity for many different inventors and over 20 different carbines were used during the conflict on the Union side. Frank Wesson made a version of his rifle in a .44 caliber rimfire carbine format that was specifically geared for Cavalry troops. While it is unclear whether or not Federal troops used these rifles, it is known that Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, and Ohio purchased the first type for their state militias. As William B. Edwards puts it in his book, “they were more popular with the guerrillas and irregular troops in the border fighting.” It is truly amazing the diversity of carbines and breech-loaders in general that were used during the American Civil War.
It sports a medium weight 24-inch octagon barrel. It has two triggers with the front trigger opening the barrel which tips down and has a manual extractor on the right side. The rear trigger is used to fire the rifle. It has a figure eight trigger guard with a small, scalloped finger rest. These rifles were very popular in their day due to their low cost and simplicity of operation along with their inherent accuracy.
The overall condition is good. Original patina. The bore is clear and remains in good shape. Solid stock with no cracks. The front sight is present and the rear sight apppears to be a replacment brazed to the sight bracket. Hammer does not hold cocked configuration. Barrel stuck in closed position.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
