Description:
From a Mid-West sale, a pre WWII beautiful Joh. Springer custom rifle 30-06 caliber. Based on a Springfield 03 action and a Springer barrel fitted with a rear vee sight and a blade front sight. Highly figured European walnut stock has a color case hardened and engraved butt plate, right hand raised cheek piece and borderless fine line wrap around hand checkering on the fore stock and pistol grip, internal magazine and drop floor plate. All metal is high gloss royal blue and the bolt has a European spoon style bolt handle. The custom action is smooth as butter and has been accurized with a target trigger. The receiver has traditional European claw mount scope bases and Euro see through rings holding a Hensoldt Wetzlar Dialytan 5x scope with tradational European post retcial (see photos). The top of the barrel and the top of the scope both are stamped Joh. Springer's Erben Wien (see photos). At the sale they said this gun was built on a 1903 Springfield action sometime between WWI and WWII, most likely in the 1930's. The following information was also provided.
Johann Springer came from Leutschach in Upper Hungary. He came to Vienna as an engraver in 1850. He mastered the art of finely engraving the coats of arms of noble customers in metal as well as learning gunsmithing. He specialized in the production of luxury hunting guns and won several medals at exhibitions thanks to the quality of the products. The emperor was one of the regular customers and in 1872 he was awarded the Imperial and Royal Chamber title, a higher distinction than the title of purveyor to the court. His guns received the Golden Austrian State Prize and other awards at world exhibitions such as the Grand Prix of Monte Carlo in 1908. In the 1930s, Springer was appointed royal purveyor to Monaco and counted numerous noble families among its customers, including the Liechtensteins , Esterházys , Coburgs and Orlowskis. After World War II customers included Soviet Marshal Konev, General Kaltschenko, Allied officers and the big game hunter Ernst Zwilling. Johann Springer's daughter Margarethe joined the business and took over management after Johann’s death. On April 1, 2008, Christian Johann Springer took over the company from his mother. Branchs at Kagranerplatz 9 and Weihburggasse 27 stock hunting and sporting weapons, militaria and handguns. New and used hunting guns are offered on three floors. In addition to the traditional arms trade segment for hunting and sports guns, militaria, handguns and weapons, the company is also expanding into other areas and has been offering hunting trips and gun s since autumn 2008.
