Description:
Perhaps one of the least common and least understood enlisted man’s swords of the Civil War era is the Model 1859 Marine’s Musician sword.  In 1859 the Marine Corps adopted new dress and equipment regulations, including swords that were similar to those then used by the U.S. Infantry.  The Model 1859 Marine Musician sword is similar to the Army Model 1840 NCO sword, but with a reduced or absent inner counterguard.  The first contract for the Marine swords went to Horstmann in early 1859; the second contract to Ames in November 1859 with delivery in 1860; and the third contract in 1861 again went to Horstmann. All subsequent Civil War era contracts went to Bent and Bush beginning in 1862.  Blades on these swords are found in a variety of lengths, with shorter blades of 24 to 26 inches for boy musicians, and longer blades of 29 to 31 inches for adult musicians and musician sergeants.  The sword presented here would be considered an adult version with a 29 ½” blade.  The blade was made by Horstmann, and is so stamped but difficult to see as it marked under the downturned reverse counterguard.  The obverse ricasso is stamped “PHILADELPHIA”.  The blade is decorated with etching on both sides, but as is correct for a Civil War era version, does not have the “USMC” on the blade as that did not come into use until 1875.  The brass hilt of the sword has a nice uncleaned and toned patina, and the sword retains most of its original blue felt blade washer.  The scabbard remains strong with just some light crazing.  I do note that Arizona Swords is currently offering the same sword, as well as a few other Marine Musician swords, for sale (but at a significantly higher price).  He believes that this version is likely from the Bent and Bush contract, using a Horstmann blade.  Bent and Bush did not make swords, they obtained their swords/parts from other manufacturers.  Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states.  Shipping charge $45 towards cost of Priority Mail with full insurance.  Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping.
