STUNNING ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ZOUAVE JACKET I.D. TO J.C. ROBERTSON
Stunning extremely rare Zouave Jacket bearing crescent moon insignia, likely worn at Inspection Parades or other special social functions. Very unique piece, in over 50 yrs we have not encountered a similar example. Included in package I.D. tag as dog tags did not exist during Civil War. Shield shaped identification tag, “A. Stafford / Pat Applied for” in raised letters on reverse. Obverse with eagle with raised wings surrounded by stars holding in its beak a ribband scroll draping across it stamped with the owner’s name: “J.C. ROBERTSON / PITN. ZOUAVE / PA.” There are a number of Pennsylvania J. or J.C. Robertsons with Civil War service, but unit may be the Pittston Zouaves which would accord with this style of Jacket and Tag. A very patriotic tag demonstrating the continued romantic allure of Zouave troops . CONDITION: Excellent.
Both the Confederate and Union armies had regiments of fierce Zouave fighters. Adapted the Zouave-styled uniform in the Crimean Wars in the mid-1850s, military units in the United States were styling themselves as Zouave soldiers as there were over 70 Regiments.
