Description:
#16030, John Rigby & Co. Dublin & London: Listed With a Consecutive #16029 577/500: A Rigby Back Action Rebounding Hammer Jones Action Underlever 500/450 Black Powder Express Double Rifle with Outstanding Bore Condition, Made in 1889, 26" Steel Extractor barrels, The barrels are marked "Case 500/450 Powder 132 Grains - Cannelured Bullet 350 Grs", Full length rib with 1 standing & 1 folding platinum lined rear sights, Proofed in London, Rebounding locks, Carved percussion fences, Swing lever forend release, Horn grip cap, Sling eyes, 14 3/4" LOP over a full face checkered steel buttplate, 8 lbs. 10 oz., A Super Piece of wood with great color & contrast of black & brown, The wood is very stout both in the butt and forend, 60% coverage of period scroll engraving that remains sharp and crisp that includes the hammers, top strap, opening lever, trigger guard and forend, This excellent conditioned classic has 75% absolute original case colors remaining, The barrels retain an honest 70% original black, The buttstock and forend have been professionally re-oiled, Another very strong point to this gun is the bores look like the day it left Rigby and remain in excellent plus condition, The screws remain in 95%, The breech face has 90% case colors remaining, The strikers and the retainer nuts for the strikers still have a lot of heat blue left, This gun honestly appears that it was never used of fired much. Here is another first-rate quality, style, grace, workmanship, handling, and Rigby romance from a great period at the pinnacle of sporting guns in the last years of the 19th century. As many of you know, I have seen my fair share of period black powder express double rifles but not many are as mechanically stout as this piece with bores that look like they did in 1889 and the day it walked out of Rigby. This gun has a consecutive numbered, #16029, 577/500 BPE with bores that are mint, and it appears unfired.

Rigby was at 72 St. James's St. from 1866 to 1907 and then at 43 Sackville St. from 1908 to 1955 and then on to 32 King Street, St James's. In 1963 the shop moved to 28 Sackville Street and in 1969 to 13 Pall Mall. In 1984 J Roberts & Son (Gunmakers) Ltd bought the company and in 1985 moved it to their premises at 5 King Street, Covent Garden. In 1987 the factory and shop moved to 66-68 Great Suffolk Street, Southwark. In 1997 the goodwill and rights to the Rigby name were bought by Rogue River Rifle Works and a new company, John Rigby & Co Inc. was formed at 1317 Spring Street, Paso Robles, California. On about March 1, 2013, John Rigby & Co. was acquired by Blaser of Germany. All connections with the unbelievable and indescribable mess in California have been severed, and the Rigby Company is back in London and run by Marc Newton. I wish them well and hopefully Rigby can again make its mark as one of the leading sporting gun makers ever to practice the art of gunmaking. Long live the King! Check them out at johnrigbyandco
