Description:
Offered here is a Civil War era New York National Guard bayonet shoulder belt with a slightly post-war 7th Regiment cross belt plate attached. The Pattern 1839 shoulder belt can be dated by the maker stamp on the inner surface. Enough of it is still visible to determine that it is of John A. Baker, 63 Walker St., New York. The firm was at this address and using this name from 1858 to 1863. John A. Baker died in 1862. The top portion of an 1828 bayonet scabbard is still within the bayonet frog. Originally the 7th Regiment would have used a different belt plate than the one shown here when this shoulder belt was made, but the belt must have remained in use after the Civil War and the holes in the belt slightly modified to use the 1867 style plate currently attached. The belt is in very fine condition. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.
