Description:
James S. Huston was born 22 May 1829 and died 15 April 1908. He served during the Civil War as a first sergeant in Company I of the 30th regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Serving with Company I at Fort Union in the Dakota Territories from early 1864 until June 1865. The 30th regiment mustered out 20 September 1865. His military career included being a Civil War veteran, Indian fighter and finally General of the Militia. He was appointed Adjutant General by the Govenor on 18 April 1889. He was the last Adjutant General in the Dakota Territory and the first in the new state of South Dakota. At the time of his appointment he held the rank of Brigadier General of the Militia. The Colt revolver is a Model 1860 Army 44 caliber serial number 60045. Colt serial number records indicate this was manufactured in 1862. This is the same year the 30th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry was mustered in.
The revolver retains a pleasing brown/plum patina. The walnut grips are very good with the exception of marks on the butt. The brass trigger guard .is also nice. The frame, barrel, trigger guard and back-strap are matching numbers 60045. The cylinder is mis-matched and the wedge is a replacement. The mis-matched cylinder is not unusual for revolvers used in service. Mechanically the revolver reflects the years of service as the hammer spring is somewhat weak and the cylinder rotates when cocking but does not fully index sometimes. The revolver includes a slim jim holster that was with the revolver under General Huston's ownership.
