Description:
Boss 12 Gauge Sidelever. This gun has great balance, really shootable modern dimensions and is worthy of the name Boss in every way. The gun was ordered new by the Earl of Kinnoull and was finished July 3rd of 1905 as one of a pair. All three of the barrel sets are numbered on the top with a gold number two that is consistent in shape and form throughout the barrel sets. The proof marks are also consistent throughout the barrel sets making it appear that all three barrel sets were built with the gun, though one the barrel sets are numbered to a different Boss gun or were numbered differently as added later to this gun. A 29" set and a 30" set both match the serial number of the gun while an additional set of 29" barrels is 370 numbers apart and all three carry the 73 Saint James address with the added set also having a 1975 London reproof. . The action is a square back Boss action with early style house rose and Bouquet engraving, Lever on right and tight on the face, Marked Boss & Co in banner with no block letter Boss Patent Ejector marking, thought the gun does have patent ejectors that are strong and well timed. The action is coin finish and shows no signs of ever having been re-hardened, the furniture has been reblued and all engraving edges are sharp. The barrels are all in good condign with all having 2 1/2" chambers and clean bores. The blue is consistent across the sets all of which have been reblued very well at some time in the past. The barrel wall thicknesses are also fairly consistent across the sets being .022 thou as most likely was factory original based on the bore diameters. Barrels set number 1 is 30", .735/.736 with chokes .020/.020. Barrel set number 2 is 29", .734 and .736 with chokes .021/.020. Barrel set number 3 is 29" .730/.732 and both chokes Cyl. The stocks are both is good condition with no oil soaking or cracking and have not been reshaped or materially changed over the years with the exception of an added leather covered pad. The wood is nicely figured with sharp chequering and nice finish. The length of pull is 14 1/2" with no cast, Drop at heel is 2 5/8" and Drop at comb is 1 5/8", the diameter of the wrist is comfortable and not too thin. Weight is 6lbs 8oz. The case is period correct and in good condition. It is an oak and leather of the type I have seen on other Boss pairs and multi barrel sets from the time with nice baize that has been redone at some recent point, there are snap caps and a bottle. 050581 MSSSSDP $19500.00
